SUPER BOWL SECRETS

The impressive and unexpected pummeling of the Denver Broncos by the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 2014 was an awesome event.  Not often is a world-class competition decided so quickly and so conclusively. It’s worth taking a deeper look at how this happened and learn from three great leaders.

Seahawks’ coach Pete Carroll’s approach to leading his team and bringing out the best in everyone has been cited as one of the factors for the win. In his victory speech to the team, he reiterated this:  “It wasn’t one guy; it was all of us together.”

A second factor was the relentless pursuit of excellence – to become better and better all the time.  Seahawks’ general manager John Schneider said about himself and coach Pete Carroll, “... we’re continually pushing the envelope every single day trying to get better.”

Third, Seahawks’ owner Paul Allen gives thanks not only to his team and their leaders, but also to the 12th man - the Seahawks fans - who tirelessly supported their team and lived up to the short-form of the word “fanatic”.  About the fans, Paul Allen said, “Just thank you so much, and it was an incredible, such an incredible year, and I just remember the thunderous chants, and the real intimidation that they were able to bring to CenturyLink."

Three wise ideas from three wise men:

  1. Working together;
  2. Continuously pushing the envelope of excellence; and,
  3. Honoring and thanking supporters.

What’s next?  More Super Bowls, of course.  The day after the victory, coach Pete Carroll spoke about getting ready for the next ones when he said, “That starts tomorrow. Our guys would be surprised if we didn’t.”

This is an opportunity for us all to learn lessons from the best as the Seahawks are moving onward and upward.
