Debunking the Happiness Myth: Are the self-help methods to happiness helping you?

The self-help industry has become somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon. It is used both personally and professionally. And with it, are the happiness experts who say that we can all be happy if we just follow their simple advice; that if we follow what they say, we will have increased happiness and with this, increased success.

We are advised to think positively, to use mantras and affirmations, to collect testimonials about ourselves in which others say great things about us. We read books about successful people and learn tips on how to model our own success after theirs. We participate in group support forums that are designed to take our games to the next level.

But does this really make us more successful? Underneath the measurement of success, does it really make us happy and feel better? Does it genuinely help us experience true joy in our personal and business lives?

If this is really the case, then why are so many employees stressed and burnt out, and reaching out for mental health help? Why are mental health problems on the rise so much that it has become a hidden epidemic that carries stigma and is a major contributor to rising health care costs?

After a few years of this, here’s my view:

I have followed the “I can be happy and be more successful” kick for many years, I did manage to improve my outlook, happiness and success. However, when push came to shove and tragedy hit my family, I was forced to look deeper.

In looking deeper, I found more. I found that the happiness philosophies could not work for me. I found that there was inner pain that could not continue to be shoved down and denied. It had to be worked through. And I found that I was not the only one who suffered from inner pain from family tragedy, military trauma, severe illness or loss. This pain must be reduced to make room for joy and happiness.

Who wants to work hard?  And who wants to work hard through their pain? No one. But when lives of loved ones are at stake, we do what we must.

What I learned is that the work is not easy, but if it is done, the rewards are truly amazing – nothing short of a miracle.

This experience has led me to ponder whether the happiness and success recipes of modern culture truly work for everyone. In the past they have worked for me, somewhat, but it was different work; working through the pain of my life – that made the big difference.

In the fast-paced business world we live in, admitting to pain can be considered weak. Surely in the past, I would never have admitted to having deep-seated pain that affected everything I do. But now that I am dealing with it, I am in a far better place.

So what does this mean to winning new business? It means that if we want passion, which indeed is essential to conquer challenges, then we must look at our own selves. If we look at ourselves, we may find that we are one of those people who are naturally happy – one of those who can listen to the experts and simply become happier. Or we may find that we are one of the many who have pain in our lives, whether from trauma, abuse, bad family relationships, rejection, family diseases, losses, divorce, etc. Whatever the case may be, for this latter group, happiness gurus cannot help us. It is necessary to work through our inner pain to make room to experience our inner joy.
